Mediation is often thought of as one of the most time-efficient and cost-effective means of resolving a family matter. In fact, most judges in the DFW area require parties to attend mediation before scheduling a final trial.

Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution whereby a neutral third person assists parties to a suit in reaching an agreement concerning the issues of their case. The neutral third party does not give legal advice or instruct the parties on their decision but acts as an intermediary between the parties who helps each person brainstorm solutions to the issue at hand and develop options for resolution of the case.

At mediation, the parties and their attorney(s) are usually placed in separate rooms with the mediator going from room to room to facilitate resolution of the matter. Generally, mediation lasts for either a half-day or full-day, depending on the disputed issues and complexity of the case. Mediation fees can range anywhere from $150.00 per party for a half-day mediation to thousands of dollars per party for a full-day. Clients often find mediation less expensive than trial, though, as each party's attorney does not have to spend as much time in preparation for mediation as that spent for trial.
